BACKGROUND
The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the Cooperative
Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder,
serves as a national information and referral center in support of snow
and ice research. Our mission is to make fundamental contributions to
cryospheric science and excel in managing data and disseminating
information in order to advance understanding of the Earth system.
NSIDC archives digital and analog snow and ice data. We maintain
information about snow cover and avalanches, glaciers and ice sheets,
sea ice, ground ice and permafrost, atmospheric ice, paleoglaciology and
ice cores. We create and distribute data products on CD-ROM and other
media.
NSIDC is one of eight distributed active archive centers (DAACs)
participating in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's
(NASA's) Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS).
Many satellite image and satellite derived products are contained within
the aegis of the DAAC.
JOB OVERVIEW
User Services Representatives act as the central interface to the user
community on behalf of the entire National Snow and Ice Data Center.
This interface function includes collecting and maintaining user contact
and request information, providing and/or coordinating information and
data services in response to user inquiries, tracking communication and
correspondence, ensuring that inquiries have been satisfied following
established procedure, and representing the user perspective in product
development efforts. Additional responsibilities include participation
in working groups and representing User Services in other Data Center
tasks and meetings as appropriate. The position reports to the User
Services Lead.
DUTIES
A. Handling User Inquiries
Monitors incoming e-mail, telephone, fax, mail and in-person user
requests. Interviews requesters to determine and understand their data
needs, data or software problems or support requirements. Researches
sources and seeks appropriate specialist(s) to obtain information, in
order to respond to users. Enters user, inquiry and response information
in the online data request tracking system. Ensures delivery of complete
and accurate data or information products. Monitors and updates the
accuracy of NSIDC mailing lists. Interface with the EOS Core System
(ECS) and works with ECS staff to solve problems.
B. Product Development and Discipline Awareness
Researches data format, content and visualization methods for NSIDC data
products. Searches for, evaluates and maintains referral list of
alternate sources of data and information. Participates in NSIDC Product
Teams to provide a user perspective and User Services operational
viewpoint.
C. Outreach
Contributes to the development and content of outreach materials such as
brochures, catalogs, newsletters, Internet postings and exhibit
materials. Attends conferences to represent NSIDC products and services,
and to interact with the user community. Supports EOSDIS User Services
Working Group outreach activities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
(1) Bachelor's degree, preferably in an earth science discipline
(2) Two years of relevant experience
(3) Strong oral and written communication skills
(4) Problem solving and detail-oriented
(5) Ability to organize, handle, and track simultaneous and continuing
unresolved multiple tasks
(6) Customer service experience
(7) Ability to provide efficient and thorough customer service and
satisfaction
(8) Work in a team-oriented environment
(9) Ability to accommodate some travel
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
(1) Master's degree, preferably in an earth science discipline
(2) Training or experience in using remotely sensed data and satellite
image analysis
(3) Familiarity with data visualization packages
(4) Knowledge or experience in GIS
(5) Knowledge of Unix
POSITION SPECIFICS
The position will be filled as a Professional Research Assistant at the
University of Colorado at Boulder and will be eligible for employee
