The Saami Baiki Foundation has opened an Alaska office in Anchorage. The
mission of the office is to promote educational and cultural exchange
and communication between the Indigenous Sami People of the Nordic
countries and the Sami descendants in North America with other
Indigenous and Aboriginal groups.
The newly-opened office coordinated the recent poetry concert "Of the
Wild Tundra: Commemorating Nils-Aslak Valkeapaa in Yoik, Poetry and Art"
and arranged interviews and Native events for Ole Henrik Magga, Saami
Chairman of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
"The Sami: Reindeer People of Alaska," a four-year travelling exhibit,
is the current major project of the Saami Baiki Foundation in Alaska. It
will open in Bethel at the Yupik Museum 5-30 April 2004 and from there
travel to the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage for the entire
summer.
