OVERVIEW
The Department of Geology at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS),
Svalbard, Norway, invites applications for a faculty position in marine
geology. Positions at UNIS carry significant responsibilities in
research and teaching, as well as supervising MSc and PhD students.

UNIS is a state-owned limited company. Norway's four mainland
universities are represented on the board. UNIS is located in a modern
facility in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, well equipped with both technical
and scientific equipment and laboratories. The institution has access to
infrastructure for both marine and terrestrial field research on
Svalbard. The studies at UNIS are marketed internationally, and all
classes are offered in English. UNIS is highly multinational and in 2003
students from 28 countries were present at UNIS.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The vacant position is part of the Department of Geology. At the moment,
there are one Full Professor, one Associate Professor, and four Adjunct
Professors employed at the department.

The foundation for the research at the Department of Geology is
field-related activities that exploit both the geographical position and
the natural advantages of Svalbard. With its numerous terrestrial
geological exposures, landscapes, and adjacent continental shelf and
margin, Svalbard offers a range of unique geological opportunities to
study processes related to development and infill of sedimentary basins.
For the next years the general research at the department will focus on
sedimentary basins at high latitude and the processes controlling their
development and infill through time and space, including tectonics,
sea-level changes, palaeoceanographic and climatic changes, and
present-day high-latitude terrestrial and marine processes.

The professional background of the applicant should be related to this
scientific platform and to the courses offered by the Department of
Geology. Applicants with research background in marine geology will have
preference, but applications with other scientific backgrounds are
welcomed as well. Research experience from Svalbard or other Polar
regions will be considered an advantage. Also, previous teaching
experience and formal pedagogical education will be considered.

It is expected that the successful applicant will carry out active,
productive research in her/his special field, will supervise MSc and PhD
students, and will actively be involved in both research and teaching at
the department.

QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for the position must be able to document their
qualifications as Full or Associate Professor. To be considered for the
position of Associate Professor a PhD in an appropriate field, or its
equivalent, is the minimum requirement. All qualifications must be
documented as UNIS does not evaluate applicants for professorships.
Applicants are also requested to document their pedagogic qualifications
and experience.

A well-established international network is desirable in order to
strengthen the internationalization of the teaching offered at UNIS. It
is also important that the person who is appointed have the ability to
work independently, has a positive attitude, and is flexible.

POSITION SPECIFICS
The employment contract is usually for two successive periods of 3
years, provided mutual request for prolongation after the first 3-year
period. The contract may be extended beyond 6 years in periods of 3
years following a renewed and more thorough evaluation after 6 years.

The successful candidate will be provided with the following:
- Furnished, reasonably priced housing for families
- Free return passage for families, and relocation expenses associated
with initiation and termination of the engagement
