The Churchill Northern Studies Centre (CNSC) will be hosting the 5th
Circumpolar Ecosystems International Workshop and Symposium entitled
"Northern Margins: Changing Transition Zones in Time."
EVENT SCHEDULE
A one-day workshop will focus on snow sampling methods and
instrumentation and will take place on Thursday, 26 February 2004.
The "Snow Sample and Instrumentaion Workshop" presenters include:
John Pomeroy, Canada Research Chair in Water Resources and Climate
Change, Department of Geography, University of Saskatchewan, Canada
- Workshop Keynote Speaker
- The effect of treeline on snow accumulation and melt
Martin Schneebeli, Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, Switzerland
- Why do we need additional instruments to the classical snow profile
- The SnowMicropen: measuring structural and mechanical properties of
the snow pack
- The use of near infrared photography of a snow-pit
- Comparison of classical snow stratigraphy and tomography results
Peter Kershaw, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Science, University

- Traditional snowpit measurement techniques
Chris Derksen, Climate Research Branch, Meteorological Services of
Canada, Canada
- Monitoring terrestrial snow cover with remotely-sensed data

- Permeability and diffusion of gases within the snowpack
The symposium will be held 27-28 February 2004 and consists of a series
of oral and poster presentations.
The symposium keynote speaker is:

- Canadian Arctic climatology: Where are we?
Presenters are encouraged to stay at the CNSC and take advantage of this
opportunity to combine a practical hands-on workshop in the northern
treeline environment with a symposium designed to exchange ideas and
knowledge about these ecotones.
