POST-GRADUATE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
A number of studentships and post-doctoral fellowships are being offered
for the upcoming academic term in the Department of Geography,
University of Saskatchewan. These opportunities are being made available
through the recent establishment of a Canada Research Chair in Water
Resources and Climate Change and a forthcoming Centre for Hydrology at
the University of Saskatchewan as well as concurrent grants from the
Province of Saskatchewan, US NOAA GEWEX Americas Prediction Project;
Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Science and anticipated
grants from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of
Canada Topics.
TOPICS
Of particular interest are the many unresolved problems in describing
cold regions hydrological processes at the appropriate scale and degree
of accuracy for inclusion in hydrological estimation procedures in
western and northern Canada. The range of available topics include those
considering energy exchange with snow, snow redistribution, routing of
meltwater through snow and frozen soils, snowmelt runoff chemistry,
effect of complex terrain on evaporation, coupled hydrological process
modelling, spatial variability of hydrological parameters, states and
fluxes, cold regions hydrological modelling, the effect of extreme
meteorological events on hydrology. There is particular interest in the
effect of vegetation and a changing atmosphere on hydrology.
TRAINING
An interdisciplinary graduate degree programme in Hydrology is being
proposed, though the student will initially be registered in Geography
or other participating departments with the option of registering in
Hydrology later.
The successful applicants will join a research active team in the Centre
for Hydrology with post-graduate training in hydrology available from a
complement of 25 academics in Science, Agriculture and Engineering and
strong collaborative links to the National Water Research Institute of
Environment Canada in Saskatoon, the USDA Northwest Watershed Research
Center in Boise, USA, the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in
Wallingford, UK and the University of Wales in Aberystwyth, UK.
LOCATION
The University of Saskatchewan is a major research intensive institution
of about 19,000 students with a wide range of training available and
superb lab facilities on what is considered the most pleasant university
campus in Canada.
For further information, please go to:
http://www.usask.ca
Canadian hydrology developed from early efforts at the University and is
strongly represented through about 25 faculty in the Colleges of Arts
and Science, Agriculture and Engineering who research and teach in the
subject. The federal National Hydrology Research Centre and provincial
Saskatchewan Research Council are located in the University's research
park, Innovation Place, a few minutes walk from the university Centre
for Hydrology.
