This post is available for a fixed term of 42 months, beginning 1 March
2004, to work on a NERC funded Consortium project to provide field-based
experimental validation of measurements from the European Space Agency's
CryoSat satellite radar altimetry mission.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The post will be held at the University of Aberdeen for 21 months,
before moving to the School of Geosciences at the University of
Edinburgh in December 2005 for a further 21 months.

The successful candidate will be an essential member of a team who will
carry out field experiments during four 5-week field-seasons at sites
within the percolation and saturated-snow zones of west Greenland.
Experiments will examine the density and stratigraphy of snow and
near-surface firn, providing independent measurements of elevation
change and its causes, and a better understanding of the interaction of
the CryoSat radar echo with land ice surfaces.

In particular, the appointed applicant will be responsible for spatially
continuous measurement of near-surface stratigraphy using a very high
bandwidth (10 GHz) (VHB) radar to resolve detail at the cm scale. Output
from this project will be a crucial element of efforts to predict the
change of ice volume in the Arctic that may occur as a result of
possible climate change.

APPLICANT INFORMATION
Applicants should have a PhD, preferably in geophysics, electronic
engineering or similar discipline, and preferably with at least 2 years
of post-doctoral research experience. They should be technically
proficient in the use of VHB radar, and will be expected to display
competence and initiative in handling the technical and logistical
challenges of organising and undertaking remote geophysical fieldwork in
a demanding environment. The successful candidate will work closely with
PIs and post-graduate students during fieldwork and in Aberdeen and
Edinburgh and should have good interpersonal and communication skills.
