The North House Folk School, an educational non-profit organization
located on the shore of Lake Superior in Grand Marais, Minnesota, USA,
is pleased to announce the return of the annual Winterer's Gathering &
Arctic Film Festival.

Scheduled for November 20-23, 2003, this multi-day educational event was
created a year ago as an educational event to project its mission and
inspire awareness of northern cultures, the arctic environment and the
human connection to the northern regions of the globe. North House Folk
School is devoted to enriching lives and building community through the
teaching of traditional northern crafts.

Five basic tenants guide all programs and classes at the folk school:

  • Create a rich, positive environment that inspires life-long learning
    in a non-competitive environment.
  • Help students recognize and develop their creativity, talents and
interests in a student-centered environment that affirms individual
    differences.
  • Promote and preserve the knowledge, skills, crafts and stories of the
    past and present.
  • Foster the concept of inter-generational learning.
  • Provide creative and meaningful opportunities for individuals,
    families and groups.

The aim of this announcement is to strengthen the links between the
various individuals and organizations involved in enhancing arctic
learning opportunities by asking for nominations for films to be shown
at North House Folk School's Winterer's Gathering and Arctic Film
Festival. Moreover, North House wishes to establish a network of
individuals and organizations related to the Arctic region through the
establishment of an Arctic Film Festival nomination process. The
nomination process will be driven by individuals or organizations that
are interested in arctic education, travel, history and culture.

The Arctic Film Festival is a new component to this year's growing
event. Drawing on the success of last year's showing of three
remarkable films (Nanook of the North, Pathfinder and Zero Kelvin),
North House is attempting to organize a film festival drawing from the
creative resources in the film industry - particularly innovative,
independent films that capture a sense of place of the arctic region.

As a non-profit educational organization and in respect to the
non-competitive educational atmosphere North House wishes to instill,
the film festival aspires to show up to eight films in four respective
categories:

(1) Classic- This category includes black and white films, silent films,
films predating 1970's, or films that have inspired a new era or style
of filmmaking with an established following.

(2) Documentary- This category includes films that are subject specific,
non-fiction, documenting people, places, animals, environment, etc.

(3) Ethno-Historical- Any film that captivates the cultural landscape of
the arctic region.

(4) Expedition- Films that relate to adventure expeditions, scientific
expeditions or where the subject of the film is the expedition itself.

These categories have been created not to judge the films but rather
meet the diverse range of arctic issues best represented in the media
arts. An independent jury committee will meet to review film
nominations and select films to be shown based on availability and film
distributor's discretion.

As part of the nominating process, individuals and/or your organization
are asked to -

  1. Nominate up to three films to be shown at the festival.

  2. Provide film information that includes availability of film, length
of film, format of film (35mm, DVD, video cassette, etc.) and a brief
    summary of film.

  3. Provide source information for showing the film, including key
contacts such as director, filmmakers, producers, etc for screening
    rights and distribution

  4. Submit film nominations no later than November 1, 2003. Please
contact Scott Pollock (spollock [at] northhouse.org) for the film nomination
form. Fax, e-mail, or direct mail is acceptable.

If you or your organization have any questions regarding the Winterer's
Gathering & Arctic Film Festival, or specific questions related to the
Film Festival, please contact Program Director, Scott Pollock, at North
House Folk School. You do not need to be in attendance for the Film
Festival itself for your nomination to be considered. Nominations will
be considered by an independent committee by November 10, 2003 and
screened on the dates of the event.
