The Scott Polar Research Institute is pleased to announce publication of
a new journal in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences
Siberian Branch.
EARTH'S CRYOSPHERE
Kriosfera Zemlii
An English-language version of the Russian journal of geocryology,
published by the Russian Academy of Sciences Siberian Branch in
collaboration with Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge.
Special Issue: 106 pages. 2003 ISSN 1560-7496.
Following the extensive collaboration between Russian scientists and
Scott Polar Research Institute personnel over many years, and especially
recent collaborative translation projects, it was decided to publish an
English-language edition of Kriosfera Zemlii. This journal's extensive
coverage of the cold regions with respect to terrain conditions,
geomorphology, ground contamination, climate instability effects,
construction procedures, oil and gas and many other topics makes it
important, particularly in presenting Russian findings on topics not
always well-covered in the English language literature.
The English language version is published on a non-profit basis as a
scholarly venture. Readership and subscriptions could not be expected to
approach that of most translated journals while the subject matter
requires the highest standards of translation and editing. To this end,
specialists from various fields have donated their time and much
goodwill to a trial first issue (with selected articles), now available
in a limited edition for US$30.00. It includes recent articles on gas
hydrate stability in permafrost; prediction of changes of freezing
ground distribution with climate change; construction procedures for
major buildings on permafrost; distribution of permafrost below the
Arctic ocean; GIS in geocryology and other current topics.
It is the hope of all those concerned, that it will be possible to continue
publication in the future to a similar standard. At this time of
unprecedented development of the Earth's cold regions, the benefits of
sharing the extensive Russian expertise with the knowledge available in the
English speaking world should be at a maximum. It is the hope of the joint
publishers that all members of the permafrost community will encourage their
libraries and other organisations to take out annual subscriptions, or to
assist financially in other ways. Purchasing a copy of the trial issue
ensures that you will be kept informed of progress.
