New website to address arctic health concerns

Please see the new ArcticHealth website at:
http://www.arctichealth.org/

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) Health Sciences Information
Service and the National Library of Medicine have teamed up to create a
new public website, ArcticHealth (http://www.arctichealth.org/), to
address health issues of particular concern to residents of northern
regions.

Administered by UAA and funded by a grant from NLM, ArcticHealth will
give health care professionals and consumers access to health
information drawn from hundreds of local, state, national and
international agencies, and numerous non-governmental organizations,
professional societies and universities.

The site has sections devoted to health topics especially relevant to
residents of the Far North, as well as information on traditional
healing, telehealth/telemedicine, environmental health and "Health in
the News." It will also include a database of health-related
publications, with links to full text documents in many cases, and
information on health research projects.

Specialized populations often have health care needs different from the
needs of the general public. For example, Alaska Natives are affected
disproportionately by alcoholism, tuberculosis, diabetes,
and unintentional injuries. ArcticHealth site is the first in what is
planned to be several NLM-funded sites targeting these specialized
populations (NLM is also planning an Asian-American Health site, for
example.)
