At University of Tromso, Norway, there is a vacant associate
professorship in microbiology at the Department of Biology at the
Faculty of Science. The Department of Biology is composed of three
research/teaching divisions, Botany, Zoology, and Plant Physiology and
Microbiology. The advertised position is connected to the largest
division, the Division of Plant Physiology and Microbiology. The
Division has 8 faculty members and a technical staff of 5. The ongoing
research activity in the microbiology group is focused on genetic and
functional diversity of soil bacteria, nitrogen fixing rhizobia,
cyanobacteria, and methane oxidisers. The group wishes to strengthen its
research in the area of arctic terrestrial ecosystems. This position is
created to introduce new "state of the art" molecular approaches to our
existing research projects and to update our competence in whole
ecosystem studies. The person we seek should have proven competence in
general molecular biology techniques and application of current
molecular methods in microbial ecology, such as in ecosystem analysis.
Experience in bioinformatics would be an advantage.
Fifty per cent of the working time should be devoted to research,
research related activities and research administration. The remaining
50 per cent is to be used for teaching, teaching related activities and
administration.
Arctic research has high priority at the University of Tromso. In
addition to the University several other research institutions are
located in Tromso, among others, the Norwegian Polar Institute, the
Norwegian Institute for Nature Research and the Norwegian Institute for
Air Research. This offers opportunities to develop unique collaborations
integrating microbiology into ecosystem research. The logistics of doing
arctic research based in Tromso is also unique. Only 1 hour away by
plane is a modern University Centre in Longyearbyen and a large
international research facilities in Ny-Alesund, both at Spitsbergen in
the High Arctic.
