The Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies, the Institute
of Environmental Sciences and the Department of Geography at Miami
University invite graduate student papers for the 2003 Annual Havighurst
Graduate Student Conference, Russia in Global Context: Peoples,
Environments, Policies. We are soliciting proposals for papers that
concern the cultural, environmental, socio-economic, and political
issues of the eight circumpolar countries, that either focus
specifically on these issues as they pertain to Russia, to another
circumpolar country, or to Russia in comparison with other circumpolar
countries. We will consider proposals from a wide range of disciplines
(geography, anthropology, international studies, environmental science,
sociology, economics, history, political science, etc.) and ranging in
scope from local case studies to regional analyses to international
comparisons. Examples of topics include: indigenous rights, local
knowledge systems, sustainable economies, environmental protection (e.g.
climate change and transboundary pollution), subsistence activities,
human health, community development and sustainable livelihoods,
education, tourism, transport and communications, resource management,
international governance and economic development strategies, and
globalization.
In the context of a broader circumpolar discourse, we intend to initiate
fruitful discussion focusing on Russia along three main lines of
inquiry:
-What are the contemporary conditions and challenges for Russia's
northern indigenous peoples and what generalizations can be made about
those conditions and challenges in comparison with the same parameters
across the circumpolar North?
-What are the contemporary policies for Russia's northern indigenous
peoples, environmental degradation, and economic stabilization and what
generalizations can be made about those policies in comparison with the
same parameters across the circumpolar North?
-What role has Russia played in the last two decades of circumpolar
cooperation; what circumpolar cooperation has meant for Russia's
indigenous peoples and environmental issues, and in what ways and by
what means can Russia's circumpolar cooperation be improved?
We encourage proposals from young researchers who have already completed
their dissertation research and/or have defended their dissertation
within the last two years. This will be an intensive 2-1/2 day working
conference during which each of the 10 selected papers will be critiqued
by the other participants including the 10 authors, summary speaker Dr.
Mark Nuttall, professor of social anthropology at the University of
Aberdeen, keynote speaker Dr. Andrei Golovnev, professor at the
Institute of History and Achaeology, Ekateringurg, organizer Dr. Susan
Crate, Havighurst postdoctoral fellow

plan to publish the final versions of papers in an edited volume.
The Havighurst Center will provide accommodation in Oxford, ground
transportation from the airport, and partial travel funding (up to $250
for domestic travel and up to $500 for international travel).
To be considered for the conference, submit an abstract of approximately
250 words and a CV to HavighurstCenter [at] muohio.edu by April 15, 2003.

We plan to get back to you by May 1, 2003. Final papers, of
approximately 15-25 pages, must be in English and submitted by October
1, 2003, at which time they will be posted on the Havighurst website:
