Summary: The Environment and Natural Resources Institute's mission
includes collecting, synthesizing and using knowledge and data in
examining and addressing natural resource and environmental issues that
are important to Alaska and to other northern regions. ENRI's Cultural
Heritage Studies encompasses a range of Anthropological, Historical and
Archaeological academic research and cultural resources management
project areas. Funding sources include local governments, and state and
federal agencies. Projects currently underway include the Wales
(Alaska) Archaeology Project that has been supported by the National
Science Foundation since 1996, a total of five task orders for projects
carried out under the terms of a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Air
Force, and a subcontract for NAGPRA and Section 106 Compliance
consultation for managing historic graves at Kanakanak Hospital,

Full-time, Term appointment, 12 months/year.
SALARY:
$1619.20 bi-weekly

Qualifications: Minimum requirements include a Master's degree and
demonstrated skills and abilities to conduct library research,
archaeological field methods and techniques, laboratory methods, and
Cultural Resources Management experience. A working knowledge of WORD or
WORDPERFECT word processing programs, and familiarity with spreadsheet
programs such as PARADOX and QUATTROPRO are required. The ability to
carry out assignments under general direction only, and contribute to
the work of other professional researchers, and the ability to supervise
and train technicians and students will be required, as are the ability
to communicate effectively and to use tact and diplomacy in interactions
with research sponsors, university staff, faculty and students, and the
general public. Extensive travel may be required, and work may be done
under adverse weather conditions. Training and/or experience in
historical archaeology is desirable. Knowledge of archaeological field
survey and excavation techniques and a working knowledge of the 36 CFR,
Part 800 Section 106 Compliance process and National Environmental
Policy Act are required.
Responsibilities: Assist the Cultural Heritage Studies, ENRI, lead
scientist in conducting a range of Anthropological, Historical and
Archaeological academic research and cultural resources management
projects. Duties will include a range of archaeological field work
including survey, testing and excavation. Related responsibilities are
developing and maintaining professional quality field and laboratory
records and documentation, conducting analyses of archaeological data,
and writing sections of project reports. Other responsibilities will
include office-based research and writing projects related to academic
research and cultural resources management. Supervisory responsibilities
will include training technicians and students in field and laboratory
methods, and overseeing their work.
