The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) will be organizing
its Circumpolar Ethnographic Field School for 2003 in partnership with
Syktyvkar State University. Students will spend three months in Russia
learning how to do anthropological research in a field setting. Basic
Russian-language training will be provided with no more than 10 students
per instructor. Six weeks will be spent in the capital of the Komi
Republic (the city of Syktyvkar), a month in a northern Komi village
(Izhma region), and a few days are planned on the tundra with Izhma
reindeer herders. This experience is oriented to anthropology students,
but we will consider students from other disciplines. See website (link

Coursework
Students will be registered for a total of 15 credits (one full term).
The courses:
-Beginners to Intermediate Russian (6 credits)
-Ethnographic Field Methods (ANTH 421-3 credits)
-Ethnographic Research Project (ANTH 422-6 credits)
Costs
The cost of the 3-month field school is estimated at $6,000 CDN for
Canadian citizens and permanent residents. This will include tuition,
living costs, airfare and spending money. The cost of a Russian visa and
travel medical insurance is extra and paid by the student. The estimated
cost for foreign students is $5,500 USD.
