If you are interested in using any of the services described below,
please submit a tentative proposal to DPC before 1 September 2002. The
tentative proposal should include: title, project period, names of
involved institutions, name and e-mail addresses of the involved
scientists.

The interest among scientists for doing research in the National Park of
North and East Greenland has been increasing over the last few years,
because:

The area has a large potential for studying natural interactions in
time and space between climate and ecosystem (including humans).
There is an increased interest in Greenland for human and natural
history of the National Park and for the potentials in using the
National Park, for example, for tourism.

Based on grants by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Innovation,
and the Commission for Scientific Research in Greenland, the Danish
Polar Center (DPC) provides logistic services supporting the practical
issues involved in carrying out research in Greenland. Some of these
means are allocated to operate the long-term logistic service hubs at
Zackenberg, Mestersvig, and Daneborg while other funds are earmarked for
strategic initiatives.

During 2003 and 2004 DPC will establish logistic service hubs for
research projects at different sites in the National Park of North and
East Greenland. By doing so, DPC will reduce the logistic costs for
research projects planning to work in this very remote part of the
world. In 2003 and 2004 the logistic service hubs will have the
following main science topics:

2003: Biodiversity along east-west and north-south gradients

2004: Man and environment in Northeast Greenland during the last
4500 years

It is the ambition to make the services optimal for projects relating to
the main science topics, but if space is available there is no
limitation on the type of research projects being carried out under the
auspices of the logistic service. This means that, for example, a
geological project is most welcome to use the logistic services targeted
at biodiversity if space is available after evaluation of the submitted
bio-diversity projects.

BIODIVERSITY SERVICE
The logistic services focused at the biodiversity topic will be
established in cooperation with the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat.
The service hub will be located, at Zackenberg Station (74°30'N,
20°30'W) in the central part of the National Park. The services provided
will include:

Transport to/from Zackenberg at normal cost.

Accommodation at Zackenberg at normal cost.

Laboratory equipment and facilities relevant to biodiversity research.
Transport (by aircraft or zodiac) to six different field sites along
an east-west and a north-south gradient centered in Zackenberg Station.

DPC and the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat will - to the highest
possible degree - coordinate and facilitate cooperation between the
involved science projects. The logistic service hub is planned to be
open 15 July to 15 August 2003 and the anticipated maximum capacity will
be 20 scientists.

MAN AND ENVIRONMENT SERVICE
The logistic service hub catering to Man and Environment topics will be
established at Eskimonæs (74°05'N, 21°15'W) on the south coast of
Clavering Island close to the large Thule Culture Eskimo site situated
there. The services will include all pertinent logistics to undertake
research at this remote site. DPC will arrange transport to/from the
locality, accommodation, food and basic field equipment.

The cost of using the service hub and the transport will be similar that
at Zackenberg Station (for current prices see the web site:
http://www.zackenberg.dk. Furthermore, reconnaissance trips out of
Eskimonæs (by aircraft or zodiac) to three relevant Paleo- or Neo-Eskimo
sites will be integrated parts of the services. These logistic services
are planned to be available 15 July to 15 August 2004.
