The project is part of a UK Natural Environment Research Council
programme to investigate the marine environment of Antarctic and
Greenland ice shelves using an autonomous submersible vehicle. Further

Physical Oceanographer, British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, UK
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment
Research Council (NERC), is a government-funded organization responsible
for a world-class programme of scientific research in Antarctica and
related regions.
We are now seeking a Physical Oceanographer to be responsible for the
collection, processing, and interpretation of oceanographic data
collected by the NERC Autosub. Assisting with the shipboard
oceanographic programme (CTD, ADCP and water sampling), you will also
provide support with the downloading and quality checking of the data.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Three-year post associated with project funded by NERC Autosub Under Ice
thematic programme. Joint project between BAS and Open University to
study role of warm Upper Circumpolar Deep Water in the determining the
melt rates of floating ice shelves in the Amundsen/Bellingshausen Sea.
Work will focus mainly on the data collected by Autosub beneath the ice
shelves, but will also involve work with data collected by ship near the
ice shelves during the Autosub deployments. Will also involve close
collaboration with OU group working on ship/Autosub data from the
remainder of the continental shelf. Further details of the programme can
be found at:
http://www.soc.soton.ac.uk/SOES/MSC/OC/CEO/aui/aui.html
REQUIREMENTS:
You should have a good degree in a numerate/physical science, plus
research experience and a strong background in physical oceanography or
similar. Knowledge of differential calculus is essential, together with
Windows and UNIX skills.
This is a three year post which is based in Cambridge, but you will be
required to participate in the RRS James Clark Ross (JCR) cruise to the
Amundsen/Bellingshausen Sea; you must therefore be physically capable
and medically fit to work in Antarctic conditions.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:
Participation in JCR cruise to the Amundsen/Bellingshausen Sea. The
primary geographical focus will be Pine Island Bay. Candidates will be
expected to take part in the shipboard oceanographic programme (CTD,
VM-ADCP and water sampling), and to help with downloading data (CTD,
ADCP) and water sampling from Autosub. Will also be expected to help out
with initial quality checking of all data.
Post-cruise the candidate will have primary responsibility for
processing and archiving of autosub datasets, and integration with data
sets from shipboard work. May also be required to prepare data on seabed
and ice shelf topography for use in 3D modelling of circulation beneath
the ice shelf.
Will take the lead on the interpretation of the datasets from the
sub-ice cavities. This will include: (i) tracer analysis to define the
concentrations and origin of meltwater in the water column; (ii) data
inversions to infer currents, meltwater transport and heat/mass transfer
coefficients at the ice-ocean interface; (iii) comparison between these
observations and the results of 3-d modelling of the sub-ice
circulation. Will be expected to present results at relevant
international conferences and write them up for publication in
peer-reviewed journals.
Salary will be in the range of £19,340 to £22,275 per annum, depending
on qualifications and experience. We offer a generous benefits package,
including a pension scheme, 25 days' annual leave, plus 10√ days' public
and privilege holiday.
