Observing Locally, Connecting Globally
Summer Institute for Educators
4-16 June 2001
Applications are due by 31 March 2001
Observing Locally, Connecting Globally (OLCG) is a NSF-funded science
education project based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The
goal of this program is to provide Alaskan teachers and students with
opportunities to engage in global change research focused on the local
environment and connected to larger issues of global change.
We invite you to participate in our second summer institute for teachers
to be held in Fairbanks from 4-16 June 2001. Participants will receive
summer training and classroom support in the "GLOBE" curriculum (Global
Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment); current best
practices in science education; the integration of local/traditional
knowledge into environmental studies; and collaboration with community
and university scientists.
Anyone working with students is welcome. Priority will be given to
people whose participation will add to or create a team at their site.
We are especially encouraging teams from rural Alaska consisting of
formal and informal educators, local experts in science or Native
knowledge, and/or administrators. We are also interested in teams of
urban educators working with a large number of Native students.

GLOBE Arctic POPs Program - Workshop for Educators
30 July - 4 August 2001
Applications are due by: 28 February 2001
We invite high schools to participate in the "GLOBE" Arctic POPs program
and in the first international workshop to be held at University of
Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) from 30 July to 4 August 2001. You will receive
training in GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the
Environment) and in new protocols in Arctic POPs (Persistent Organic
Pollutants). Participation in the program is considered to be at least a
3-year commitment and workshops for the second and third years of the
program will be held in arctic countries besides the United States.
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are chemical substances that
persist in the environment, bioaccumulate through the food web, and pose
a risk of causing adverse effects to human health and the environment.
POPS generally consist of three different groups: industrial chemical
products such as PCBs, byproducts such as dioxins and furans, and
pesticides such as DDT. The international community has called for
urgent global actions to reduce and eliminate releases of these
chemicals, based on the evidence of long-range transport of these
substances to regions where they have never been used or produced and
the consequent threats they pose to the global environment. Alaskans are
deeply concerned about the presence of POPs and their potential effects
on subsistence foods.
The goal of this three-year program is to involve Alaskan high school
students (along with students and scientists in other arctic countries)
in monitoring the environment with emphasis on a global study
investigating POPs. Students will take measurements, collect and prepare
samples for analysis by a Norwegian research institute (NILU), interpret
NILU analysis results, and write a report to share with other schools in
the program. Students will be invited to participate in the workshops in
2002 and/or 2003 mentioned above.
Teams of high school educators consisting of a principal and two
teachers, or a principal, one teacher and one community member are
encouraged to apply. Exceptions to this composition will be considered.
There are just two funded team spots available for this institute,
however, we may accept on a space-available basis, teams who can cover
their own costs.
