The Program in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks invites applications for a tenure track faculty position.
Candidates in mid-career are sought to provide leadership for the newly
restructured atmospheric sciences program. An appointment at associate
or full professor level may be made, depending on the seniority and
experience of the successful applicant.
Applicants should possess a doctoral degree in atmospheric sciences or a
closely related field, have demonstrated leadership ability and the
capability to generate externally-supported research, and be able to
teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the atmospheric sciences.
This position is a joint appointment with the Geophysical Institute and
the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics.
Atmospheric Sciences is a graduate program awarding MS and PhD degrees
within the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics. Research and
teaching include detecting and modeling global and regional climate
change, weather prediction, dynamic and synoptic meteorology, aerosol
physics, cloud physics, atmospheric chemistry, radiative transfer, and
remote sensing. The Atmospheric Sciences Group is involved in several
large projects including the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM)
program and the University Partnering for Operational Support (UPOS).
Group members also collaborate with colleagues conducting research on
snow, ice, permafrost, and terrestrial and marine ecosystems in other
departments, and with faculty of the new International Arctic Research
Center on campus. The group is co-located and conducts coordinated
projects with the National Weather Service. The University of Alaska is
a founding member of the University Corporation of Atmospheric
Research.
For purposes of collective bargaining, this position is represented by a
union. The successful candidate will be obligated to pay to the union
an agency fee as a condition of employment.
