Geophysical Institute - University of Alaska

Job Title: Assistant/Associate Professor of Physics
Department: Geophysical Institute and Department of Physics
Location: Fairbanks, Alaska

Closing Date: Open Until Filled

Review of candidates will begin 15 February 2001

The Geophysical Institute and the Department of Physics at the
University of Alaska Fairbanks invite applications for a tenure-track
faculty position in the field of glaciology, specializing in glacier
dynamics, with expertise in both field investigations and modeling. The
position will carry responsibilities in both research and teaching, and
will be a joint appointment with the Department of Physics (2.25 months
per year) and the Geophysical Institute (6.75 months plus 3 summer
months). The level of appointment will be at the assistant professor
level, or possibly at a higher level depending on qualifications and
experience.

A quantitative glaciologist with an interest in field studies is sought.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain an
externally funded research program on topics such as (but not limited
to) deformation and flow of glaciers and ice sheets, mechanisms of basal
motion, glacier hydrology, mass balance, and time-dependent changes in
glaciers and ice sheets including their responses to changing climate.
The appointee will also: 1) supervise graduate and undergraduate student
research projects, 2) teach a graduate-level course such as ice physics
or glacier dynamics every other year, alternating with a graduate or
undergraduate physics course or sequence of courses, and 3) perform
public service.

A Ph.D. in an appropriate field such as physics, geophysics, or a
related physical science is required. The appointee will be a member of
the Physics Department, affiliated with the Snow, Ice, and Permafrost
Group at the Geophysical Institute, and will be encouraged to
collaborate with researchers in other groups including the Cryospheric
Dynamics Group of the International Arctic Research Center. Research
facilities include laboratories, a cold room, remote sensing data
archives, the Alaska SAR Facility, the Keith Mather Library, and
computer resources including the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center.

Please send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of
research interests and experience, including a list of recent grants and
contracts, a statement of teaching interests and experience, and names,
addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of three references
