Two Faculty Positions in Physical Oceanography at
The University Courses on Svalbard (UNIS)

  • Position 1 - Full/Associate Professor (from January 2001)
  • Position 2 - Adjunct Professor - part time 20% (from August 2001)

GENERAL
The Department of Geophysics at the University Courses on Svalbard
(UNIS), Svalbard, Norway invites applications for faculty positions in
Physical Oceanography. Positions at UNIS carry significant
responsibilities in research and teaching, as well as supervising
Masters and Doctorate students. Research responsibilities apply only to
full-time faculty members.

UNIS is a foundation owned by the four Norwegian Universities and is
located in a modern facility in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, well equipped
with both technical and scientific equipment and laboratories. The
institution has access to infrastructure for both marine and terrestrial
field research on Svalbard. The studies at UNIS are marketed
internationally, and all classes are offered in English. UNIS is highly
multinational - in 1999 students from 22 countries were present at UNIS.

For the academic year 2000/2001, the Department of Geophysics at UNIS

DESCRIPTION OF VACANT POSITIONS

The vacant positions are part of the Department of Geophysics. At the
moment, there are three Full Professors, one Associate Professor, and
three Adjunct Professors employed at the Department.

  • FULL/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
    The successful applicant will be expected to pursue research in the
    field of polar oceanography and processes related to sea ice. The
    position will carry responsibilities in both research and teaching. The
    teaching covers subjects in polar oceanography and air-ice-sea
    interaction, and includes extensive use of field studies. It is expected
    that the person appointed to the job will conduct an active, productive
    research program in his/her field, and will supervise Masters and
    Doctoral students.

  • ADJUNCT PROFESSOR
    The position as adjunct professor comprises 20 per cent of full-time
    faculty. For that time the successful applicant is expected to be
    available to UNIS. He/she is expected to take part in the teaching of
    polar oceanography and air-ice-sea interaction which includes extensive
    use of field studies. Supervising Master and Doctorate students is also
    part of the responsibilities in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • FULL/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
    Applicants for the position must be able to document their
    qualifications as Full or Associate Professor. To be considered for the
    position of Associate Professor a Ph.D. in an appropriate field, or its
    equivalent, is the minimum requirement.

To be considered for the position of Full Professor the applicants must
already occupy such a position at another institution, or previously
have been found qualified at this rank.

Applicants are requested to document their pedagogic qualifications and
experience.

  • ADJUNCT PROFESSOR
    For the Adjunct Professor position we primarily seek a person qualified
    for a position as Professor. Applicants are requested to document their
    pedagogic qualifications and experience.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS FOR FACULTY POSITIONS AT UNIS

  • FULL/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
    The employment contract is for a period of 3 years with an option for an
    additional 3-year extension. In addition UNIS offer:
  • Furnished, reasonably priced housing for families.
  • Free return passage for families, and relocation expenses associated
    with initiation and termination of the engagement.
  • Free annual passage for families to their homes on the mainland.
  • Possibility for sabbatical leave.
  • Sixty per cent of the working time of full-time faculty at UNIS is
    reserved for research and professional development. In addition, staff
    is required to take part in teaching, administration, and the social
    community.
  • Approximately 30 ECTS are linked to each full-time position at UNIS.
    Full-time staff have both the professional and the administrative
    responsibility for a subject or subjects equivalent to 15 ECTS (primary
    subject). In addition they have a coordinating, administrative
    responsibility for a further 15 ECTS (secondary subject). External
    guest-lecturers augment the teaching in most course offerings to ensure
    complete, high-level instruction within each field of study.
  • All scientific staff are responsible for planning, in detail, the
    content of their primary subject and must make all necessary
    arrangements with external guest lecturers, as well as preparing for and
    coordinating the stays of guest-lecturers coming to Svalbard.
  • All faculty members are responsible for budget compliance and
    financial follow-up for their primary subject and for providing
    continuity of contact with the students in their primary course. They
    must also provide assistance in handling these tasks in secondary
    courses assigned to them.

  • The successful candidate is expected to take an active part in the
    advancement of his/her field of research and must also be willing to
    contribute to the development of UNIS in a more general sense.

  • ADJUNCT PROFESSOR
    The employment contract is for a period of 5 years with an option for an
    additional 5-year extension.

  • The position as Adjunct Professor comprises 20 per cent of full-time
    faculty. Teaching is the main responsibility and time for research
    cannot be expected. The successful candidate must be willing to
    contribute to the development of UNIS in a general sense. Further
    details of the employment conditions are arranged directly with the
    employee.

SALARY
* All salaries are set in accordance with the Norwegian government's
University salary scale.
* Full Professors are offered a gross salary of NOK 395 831, Associate
Professors a gross salary of NOK 336 731. Provided that the Adjunct
Professors are qualified for a position as Full Professor, they are
offered a gross salary of NOK 79 167.
* An annual allowance of NOK 18 400 (Svalbardtillegg) will be added to
staff salaries provided that they are residents on Svalbard.
* A Social Security contribution of 2 per cent, to the Norwegian Public
Service Pension Fund, will be deducted from the salary. Income tax on
Svalbard is 6 per cent, plus 7.8 per cent toward National Insurance
coverage.

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT
* An expert Committee will evaluate the qualifications of the
applicants.
* The Committee will review in detail the quality of the scientific work
done by the candidates. Furthermore, the applicant's background from
previous work on Svalbard and other Arctic regions will be stressed, as
well as their pedagogic qualifications. It is essential that the two
successful candidates complement each other in terms of qualifications
and experience. It is also important that the persons who are appointed
have the ability to work independently, have a positive attitude, and
are flexible. A well-established international network is desirable in
order to strengthen the internationalization of the teaching offered at
UNIS.
* The appointment will be made by the Board of UNIS based on the
recommendation from the Committee and the Director.
