H.U. SVERDRUP SYMPOSIUM

The Role of Ocean/Sea Ice/Atmosphere Interaction
in Polar and Sub-Polar Climate
Tromsø, Norway

21-24 September 2000

HOSTS
The Norwegian Polar Institute and the Fram Committee will be the hosts
of an international symposium commemorating the Maud Expedition to the
Arctic which was concluded 75 years ago. Professor H.U. Sverdrup, who
later became director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and
thereafter of the Norwegian Polar Institute, was responsible for the
scientific aspects of the expedition. Sverdrup was an oceanographer of
international renown. The American Meteorological Society, for example,
awards the Harald U. Sverdrup Medal for outstanding scientific
contributions.

TOPICS
The intent of the symposium is to provide a current assessment of the
role of ocean/sea ice/atmosphere interaction in polar and sub-polar
climate. The topics will include mixing and exchange processes, fluxes,
deep-water formation, and shelf processes. There will be invited papers,
as well as other papers. There will be poster displays and brief oral
poster presentations. Posters will have the same status as the oral
papers in the refereed published proceedings.

WORKSHOP
As part of the Symposium a workshop will be organized with the aim of
developing a broad international arctic ocean climate programme.

The workshop themes will cover the following subjects: Circumarctic
fluxes (including freshwater), Paleoclimate, Processes. It will also
include modeling input on what we need to know, and a session on new
innovative technology and observing systems.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS

**DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ABSTRACTS: 15 August 2000

Participants who want to contribute to the symposium should submit an
abstract of their proposed paper in English. This abstract must contain
sufficient details to enable the scientific steering committee to form a
judgement on the scientific merit and relevance of the proposed paper.
It should not exceed 250 words, and it should consist of these labeled
parts: Background, Aim, Method, Results, and Conclusions. References and
illustrations are not required at this stage. Place the title and
authors' name(s) and addresses (preferably including e-mail address and
fax number) at the top of the abstract.

Send abstracts to Anne Kibsgaard by email to kibsgaard [at] npolar.no.

DISTRIBUTION OF ABSTRACTS
The accepted abstracts will be distributed among registered participants
upon registration.

SUBMISSION OF FINAL PAPERS

**DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF FINAL PAPERS: 1 December 2000

Papers presented at the symposium will be considered for publication in
the refereed proceedings volume. Final typescripts of these papers
should be sent to:

H.U. Sverdrup Symposium
Norsk Polarinstitutt
N-9296 Tromso, Norway

They should be written in English and prepared in accordance with the
instructions about style that will be sent to authors with the
acceptance notification. When selecting their material, authors must
bear in mind that final submissions cannot exceed 5000 words, with the
abstract and references included in that total. The inclusion of figures
and tables will entail a commensurate reduction in the text.

SCIENTIFIC STEERING COMMITTEE will include Jochem Marotzke, UK; Petter
Haugan, Norway; John Calder, USA; Gennadi Matishov, Russia; Olav Orheim,
Norway.

CONFERENCE LOCATION
Tromsø, the capital city of Northern Norway, is a thriving community of
60,000 inhabitants at almost 70°N. Through the years it has been the
starting point for polar expeditions.

Tromsø has the midnight sun in summer, 2 metres of snow in winter, and
the world's most northerly University with 6000 students. The city is
located on a small island, surrounded by mountains.

Airline communications include about a dozen daily direct flights from
Oslo to Tromsø. The flying time is 1hr 45 min.

Tromsø is becoming a world centre for arctic research. The conference
venue, the Polar Environmental Centre, opened in December 1998, with the
Norwegian Polar Institute as its anchor institution. The Polar
Environmental Centre also embraces other independent institutions
involved in environmental and polar research.

The climate in Tromsø throughout the year is mild, due to the influence
of the North Atlantic Current. Summer temperatures vary, with a mean
temperature for August/September of about 10°C. This time of the year is
usually fairly dry, but we suggest you bring clothing for all conditions.

ACCOMMODATIONS
The principal symposium hotels will be Amalie Hotel and Comfort Hotel
Saga. The hotels are within walking distance of the conference location.
Please indicate your first and second choice on the enclosed form.
