Dear Colleagues,
The Western Arctic Shelf-Basin Interactions (SBI) project office is
sponsoring the Second Biennial SBI International Pan-Arctic Workshop
entitled "Shelf-Basin Studies and Global Change" to be held 7-9 November
2000 at Callaway Gardens outside Atlanta, Georgia. The goal of this
meeting is to encourage open discussion of Arctic science, and to
facilitate development of an international network of scientists
interested in pursuing SBI goals. Specifically these goals include "to
provide a clear understanding of the physical and biogeochemical
connections between the Arctic shelves, slopes, and deep basin. That
understanding will in turn allow realistic assessment both of the
potential responses of the Arctic system to global change, and of the
role of these interactive processes on the global system." The SBI
workshop agenda will be centered around three sub-themes:
1) Pan-Arctic Assessment and Current Research Themes;
2) Understanding the Present and Predicting the Future; and
3) Coordination of International Studies in a Pan-Arctic Framework.
This meeting has both an invited and open participation format, although
there is a maximum meeting limit of 50. Therefore, anyone in the Arctic
research community who is interested in attending should provide the
following information to me by 21 August 2000:
1) name, mailing address, email, phone and fax numbers;
2) a statement of interest for attending the meeting, including a brief
abstract (<1 page) of topics relevant to the SBI Pan-Arctic workshop
goals; and
3) if needed, a request for travel assistance [limited to housing
and meals].
Statements of interest will be evaluated by the SBI Science Steering
Committee for broad disciplinary relevancy to the goals of the workshop
and participants will be notified by 31 August. Further information will
then be sent to you related to the extended abstracts (see below) as
well as meeting logistics.
The format of this meeting will include a focused discussion that
involves all attendees. Each participant is requested to bring
information to the meeting on the goals/objectives of their
current/pending projects as they conform to the ultimate goal of a
Pan-Arctic understanding of global change effects. Specifically, this
might include comparisons of inflow shelves (Chukchi and Barents seas),
marginal seas (Beaufort Sea, Canadian Archipelago, East Siberian,
Laptev, Kara, and Greenland seas) and their interactions over their
slopes with the Arctic basin, specifically relating to changing ice
conditions, associated climate variability, and changes in
biogeochemical and ecosystem processes. As such, each participant will
be asked to make a short, 5-minute presentation, including two figures
maximum, as well as to prepare an extended abstract of their talk
(maximum 3 pages, including figures and references) that will be
provided to all participants before the meeting. We will use a modified
rapporteur system, with a subset of talks being followed by a rapporteur
synthesis on that subset. Subsequently the rapporteur will lead a
discussion period of the talks in his/her session. These abstracts will
be the basis of a proceedings document, which will ultimately include
summaries from the group rapporteurs and a general meeting overview,
with conclusions and recommendations.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me when I return
from sea after 1 August.
Best regards,
Jackie Grebmeier Chair, SBI Science Steering Committee and
Director, SBI Project Office
