Dear Northern Colleague:
You've heard about the University of the Arctic. Now you can get involved.
The University is now seeking interdisciplinary teams interested in
developing core curriculum for its signature program, the Bachelor of
Circumpolar Studies.
Two three-credit, or half year, courses are to be developed in each of the
following three core areas:
- The Physical and Natural Environment of the Circumpolar World
- The Peoples and Cultures of the Circumpolar World
- Contemporary Issues in the Circumpolar World
The curricula are to be developed to allow for modular web-based as well as
conventional on-campus delivery at multiple locations. It is anticipated
that $50,000 US will be available to each of the three selected groups to
cover development costs (subject to funding availability).
In keeping with its values of interdisciplinarity and circumpolarity, the
University will give preference to proposals from teams which include
participants from multiple fields of study and different regions of the
Circumpolar World.
Detailed terms of reference, a sample course description, the Preliminary
Plan for the Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies, and the Foundation Principles
of the Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies can all be found at the following web
address: http://www.urova.fi/home/uarctic/bcs/bcscall.html
Proposals should include:
- A letter from the chair or leader of the proposed team indicating in
which of the three areas the group is willing to develop curriculum. - Draft course outlines for each of the two courses in the chosen area
(each outline should be two to three pages long as per the sample
provided). - Sample text for one module.
- Curriculum vitae or detailed biographical notes for all participants in
the curriculum group. - A letter from the proposed host institution indicating its willingness to
administratively assist the project. - A proposed plan outlining how the team expects to accomplishment its
work.
Proposals will be selected by the Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies Program
Development Team on the basis of team composition (see above), members'
academic and professional preparation for the task, and the extent to which
proposals conform with the Foundation Principles and other key program
documents (see above). The Program Development Team reserves the right to
suggest changes to proposals and/or team composition based on the above.
Questions from interested individuals or teams may be directed to members of
the BCS Program Development Team (email addresses and phone numbers are
provided at the website http://www.urova.fi/home/uarctic/bcs/pdt.html).
