CAFF Overview Helsinki 15 October 1999
Editorial Team
Dear Colleague,
Referring to our letter of 11 June 1999 requesting your assistance in
the production of a book on the current status and trends of Arctic
flora, fauna and their habitats, we would like to express our sincere
thanks to all who have contacted us so far and indicated their
willingness to contribute.
We have received from several experts valuable material. Based on this
and other available information, Henry Huntington (U.S.) has begun to
prepare rough drafts of the general text of the book. Chapters 1-7 are
ready for review, and the remaining chapters will be drafted in the near
future. Simultaneously, Seppo Kaitala (Helsinki University) is preparing
maps and figures for the book. The draft text and graphics and a
complete outline of all the chapters, are at:
http://ginkgo.pc.helsinki.fi/caff.
New material will be added as it becomes available. The chapters and
graphics will be updated periodically according to comments and input
received.
The book will have a fairly general basic text, with boxes and inserts
adding details in the form of case studies or factual descriptions of
interesting and important phenomena. All contributors will be
acknowledged in the book, which will be officially a product of the
Working Group on the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna, under the
Arctic Council.
At this stage, we have two requests:
Review the draft chapters. Our drafts are only a starting point. Tell
us where we have made mistakes, where we can add more details, and how
we can make the text more accurate, interesting, and readable. Provide
relevant references, either for additions you suggest or for existing
text. Send comments to Henry Huntington (hph [at] alaska.net). Do not send
edited text, because your changes will be very hard to find and we may
not be able to use them. Instead, identify the section each comment
applies to, and provide suggested text or additional information, with
references.Give us suggestions for boxes and graphics. Look at the list of
possible boxes and graphics at the end of each chapter as well as maps
at the separate link. If you have material for any of these, let us
know. If you would like to recommend other subjects for boxes or
graphics, tell us. The boxes can be quite technical and scientific, and
should address relevant, interesting, and specific topics that
complement the general text. If you have suggestions, please be prepared
to provide a few pages of text and/or diagrams/maps as raw material for
us to use. Send suggestions and information to Paula Kankaanpaa
(Paula.Kankaanpaa [at] vyh.fi) or Henry Huntington (hph [at] alaska.net).
Contributions and comments are requested by December 1.
Please forward this request to any colleagues who you think might be
able to provide help for this effort. Thank you for your help!
Sincerely,
Paula Kankaanpaa
