Dear Colleague,
In keeping with its mission to promote arctic research and education, the
Board of Directors of the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States
(ARCUS) proudly announces the Fourth Annual ARCUS Award for Arctic Research
Excellence competition. The student competition will be judged in four
broad categories: Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and
Interdisciplinary Sciences, with up to four awards given. The competition
announcement is included below.
The contestants must be registered as an undergraduate or graduate student
within one year of 10 December 1999 and must be the primary or sole author
of the paper and a major contributor to the research. The papers may
address any research topic related to the Arctic. An entry form must
accompany each paper. Students should to notify ARCUS of their intent to
submit a paper by 10 November 1999 via email to arcus [at] arcus.org and
submit their papers to an ARCUS member institution representative by 10
December 1999.
The paper review panel will include top arctic researchers from various
fields. The winners of this "award for excellence" will have the added
experience of presenting their work to a broad-based audience at the
Arctic Forum in late March 2000 during the ARCUS 12th Annual Meeting in
Washington, DC. Abstracts of the winning student papers will be published
on the ARCUS Web site as well.
We encourage you to spread the word about the Fourth Annual ARCUS Award
competition to students in all disciplines who may be interested in this
opportunity to gain national recognition, present their research at a
significant assembly on arctic research, and receive a $500 cash award.

THE AWARD
Up to 4 papers will be awarded in the following categories:
* social science
* physical science
* life science
* interdisciplinary research.
Each winner will receive:
* $500 honorarium and
* Travel paid to the Arctic Forum in Washington D.C. to present paper.
THE CONTESTANTS
* Must be registered undergraduate or graduate student within one year of

THE PAPERS
* May address any aspect of Arctic research.
* Must accompany an entry form which can be obtained a

* Must be no longer than 30 pages including bibliography, single-spaced, in
no smaller than 12-point Times font, and submitted as a single, stapled
copy.
* Papers that emphasize interdisciplinary research and that consider local
and traditional knowledge are strongly encouraged.
* Winners from previous years are not eligible.
THE DEADLINE
* An email indicating an intent to submit a paper, including the title and
category, must be received at arcus [at] arcus.org by 10 November 1999.
* Papers must be submitted to one of the ARCUS Member Institution

* The awards will be announced by 14 February 2000. The Arctic Forum is
tentatively scheduled for the third week in March 2000.
