1999 SACNAS National Conference
7-10 October 1999
Portland, Oregon

The 1999 SACNAS National Conference will be held in Portland,
Oregon, 7-10 October 1999. Dr. Rita Colwell, Director of the
National Science Foundation, will be giving a special presentation.
There will also be sessions on NSF programs and proposal
preparation.

Reprinted below is Dr. David Burgess's invitation to the Conference
which can be found at http://www.sacnas.org/sac99/invitation.html.

Welcome to the 1999 SACNAS National Conference!
Welcome to your future!

Dear Science Students and Professionals:

On behalf of the SACNAS Board of Directors, speakers, presenters,
supporting organizations, and staff, it is my distinct honor to
invite you to share in the experience of the 1999 SACNAS National
Conference. This year we are excited to be able to offer you four
full days of conference sessions designed for anyone interested
in advancing their career in science.

Conference highlights include special presentations by Dr. Rita Colwell,
Director of the National Science Foundation; Dr. Douglas Osheroff,
1996 Nobel laureate in Physics; and over 100 other science professionals.

Our 1999 conference theme, "Bridging the Gaps in Education," emphasizes
SACNAS' long-standing commitment to improving science education in
Chicano/Latino, Native American, African-American, and other minority
communities. To accomplish this goal, SACNAS has built strong coalitions
with National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation,
National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration, Department of Energy, Oregon Museum of
Science and Industry, American Society for Microbiology, American
Society for Cell Biology, and other private and public agencies that
have an interest in promoting science research and education.

Because of SACNAS' strong working relationships with these agencies,
SACNAS can offer a diverse group of workshops, scientific symposia,
and other conference events. Moreover, these sessions are organized
and presented by the same researchers and educators whose discoveries
are changing the landscape and direction of scientific knowledge
today. Whether you are a student, K-12 science teacher, staff member,
faculty, or even a Nobel laureate, you will leave the SACNAS
conference with a new understanding of the science that is shaping
our lives and a clear idea of the next steps in your academic or
professional career.

It is with the very best wishes for your future that I invite you
to be a part of SACNAS history at the 15th annual SACNAS National
Conference. Please don't miss your chance to take advantage of one
of the most inclusive scientific conferences being offered today.
Join us this 7-10 October for the 1999 SACNAS National Conference
in Portland, Oregon!

Sincerely,

David R. Burgess, Ph.D.
President, SACNAS
