MONITORING PLAN IS ON THE WORLD-WIDE-WEB

The Yukon North Slope Long-term Research and Monitoring Plan is now

Where is the Yukon North Slope?

The Yukon North Slope occupies the western portion of the Inuvialuit
Settlement Region. It is an area of land and sea stretching from Alaska to
the Northwest Territories, Canada and includes all of the Yukon mainland
whose waters drain into the Beaufort Sea, Herschel Island, other islands and
the nearshore and offshore waters. Enhancing its grandeur are spectacular
regions on all sides: Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to the west,
the Old Crow Flats to the south, and the Mackenzie River Delta to the east.

What is the Yukon North Slope Long-term Research and Monitoring Plan?

The Yukon North Slope Research and Monitoring Plan is a 10+ year plan that
identifies environmental issues facing the Yukon North Slope and research
and monitoring actions that are needed to address those issues. The plan
takes into account previous research and identifies important information
gaps and opportunities for the use of existing data. The plan's goal is to
develop research and monitoring programs that are truly interdisciplinary,
involving human communities and their relationship to ecosystem health and
functioning.

The plan also provides a guide for both researchers and communities on:

  • How to involve communities in research and monitoring
  • What is expected of researchers and the communities
  • How to use traditional and local knowledge in research and
    monitoring
  • How to coordinate research and monitoring initiatives
  • How to communicate information to the communities
  • Where to get funding
  • What opportunities exist for partnerships
  • How to get research permits

Who is the Plan for?

The Yukon North Slope Long-term Research and Monitoring Plan will be of use
to communities, governments, researchers and universities who are involved
in research and monitoring activities on the Yukon North Slope. The plan
will also serve as a resource guide to university and government
researchers, identifying research and monitoring priorities and providing
guidance on how to conduct research on the North Slope.

Who prepared it?

The plan was prepared by the Wildlife Management Advisory Council for the
Yukon North Slope (WMAC (NS)). The Council consists of an independent
chairperson, two Inuvialuit representatives, one Government of Canada
representative, and one Yukon Government representative. The Council is
responsible for advising the appropriate ministers of government on all
matters related to wildlife policy, management and regulation, including
wildlife habitat and harvesting on the Yukon North Slope.
