POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
Permafrost Geophysicist
The Geophysical Institute and the Department of Geology and Geophysics at
the University of Alaska Fairbanks invite applications for a tenure-track
faculty position in the field of permafrost geophysics. The position will
carry significant responsibilities in both research and teaching, and will
be a joint appointment with the Department of Geology and Geophysics (2.25
months) and the Geophysical Institute (6.75 months plus 3 summer months).
The level of appointment will depend on qualifications and experience, and
the potential to develop an externally funded research program and
contribute to teaching.
The successful applicant will be expected to pursue research in the field
of permafrost geophysics, with particular emphasis on the ground thermal
regime, active layer and permafrost processes, and the relationships
between permafrost and climate. Candidates with interests in permafrost
hydrology, and air/permafrost boundary layer processes are also encouraged
to apply. The appointee will: 1) supervise graduate and undergraduate
student research projects, 2) contribute to the teaching of permafrost
geophysics, and other topics such as frozen ground geomorphology and
hydrology, ice and climate, and exploration geophysics, and 3) perform
public service.
A Ph.D. in an appropriate field is required, with expertise in field
investigations, numerical analysis, and simulation of permafrost processes.
The appointee will be a member of the Snow, Ice, and Permafrost Group of
the Geophysical Institute, and will be expected to collaborate with
researchers in other research groups such as Atmospheric Sciences and
Remote Sensing. Opportunities also exist for inter-disciplinary research
with other UAF faculty and members of the International Arctic Research
Center (IARC). Research facilities include laboratories, a cold room,
remote sensing data archives including the archives of the Alaska SAR
Facility, and computer resources including those of the Arctic Region
Supercomputing Center.
