Nipissing University's 4th Annual Conference
in Temagami, Ontario, May 14-16, 1999
CALL FOR PAPERS / PRESENTATIONS / TALKS
This interdisciplinary conference focuses on the northern experience and
culture. In previous years, the conference has brought together academics
and other professionals (poets, painters, filmakers, historians, social
scientists, economists, and cultural geographers) to discuss
representations of the north in Canadian culture and history. Topics have
ranged widely, from the postmodern North and the North in film, to oral
history and cultural heritage.
For centuries the North has provided space for dreaming. The final year of
the millenium seems an appropriate time to reflect on the dreams and plans
that have brought us to this point, their influence on our understanding of
the present, and the kind of dreaming that will be possible in the future.
This year's conference will take place in Temagami, a place which has
inspired and been shaped by the dreams, hopes and plans of indigenous
people, pioneer settlers and traders, and the many cultures of present-day
Canada. The conference will conclude with a discussion of another
dream-in-the-making: an Institute of Northern Culture and Development to be
created at Nipissing University.
Nipissing University invites artists in any discipline, educators, critics,
community leaders, academics and entrepreneurs to submit proposals and/or
abstracts for papers, presentations and panel discussions on the dreams and
plans, the successes, failures and vision for the future of North. In the
belief that Canada has much in common with other Nordic Countries, this
invitation is extended to all those interested in Nordic development and
culture. Nipissing University will publish an edited volume of conference
proceedings early in the new millenium.
Abstracts should be approximately 250 words for papers or presentations.
Papers will be allocated 25 minutes for presentation, with longer periods
available for perfomances such as music or film.
