Conference Objectives
-To bring diverse groups together to examine issues in a positive sharing
environment.
-To promote dialogue on the practical issues involved in the incorporation
of traditional knowledge in community development.
-To explore development that is environmentally, socially, culturally and
economically sustainable.
Target Group
Participants will include representatives of communities, community
organizations, government (band, municipal, provincial and federal),
industry and academia (post-secondary professors and students).
Themes
Presentations will incorporate two or more of the following areas. In all
areas presenters will discuss outcomes, challenges, benefits, improvements,
and future directions
Opportunities and Ideas
Here presentations may examine current and past examples where traditional
knowledge has been or attempted to be incorporated.
Approaches to incorporation
Approaches to incorporation are the methods used to explore applications of
traditional knowledge: such as participatory action research (PAR),
environmental impact assessment (EIA) geographic information systems (GIS)
co-management, negotiation, community participation etc.
Partnerships
Partnerships are the ways organizations have worked together to explore and
incorporate traditional knowledge into projects. They may involve
relationships between communities, band, tribal councils, governments,
industry, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions.
Case Studies
Here presentations may examine current and past examples where traditional
knowledge has been or has been attempted to be incorporated.
