The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs (OPP) invites applications for the position of Section Head in its Antarctic Sciences Section. This full-times, permanent position will be located in Alexandria, Virginia.

The Section Head, Antarctic Sciences Section, is responsible to the Office Director for the overall planning, management, and commitment of budgeted program funds for the Section. The incumbent provides leadership to the Section, which supports the discipline-based programs Antarctic glaciology, astrophysics and geospace sciences, ocean and atmospheric sciences, earth sciences, and organisms and ecosystems, as well as programs for Antarctic integrated system science and for instrumentation and research facilities. The incumbent guides the Section in formulating and implementing its research objectives and manages its administrative, fiscal, and personnel aspects. The incumbent also works in close collaboration with the Section Heads for Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics and Polar Environment, Safety and Health in implementing research objectives requiring an Antarctic presence, and with the Section head for Arctic Sciences in supporting research activities occurring at both poles.

Appointment to this position is contingent on satisfactory completion of a physical examination according to the standards used for the U.S. Antarctic Program's medical/dental screening for travel to Antarctica.

Essential requirements for this position include:

  • A PhD or equivalent professional experience or both in an area of current or emerging research interest in polar regions (e.g., glaciology, astrophysics and geospace sciences, ocean and atmospheric sciences, earth sciences, and organisms and ecosystems and/or their intersection);
  • Substantial research contributions and strong evidence of scholarship and leadership in one or more of the major fields in polar research, as evidenced in publications and other professional contributions;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with scientists from a variety of disciplines, fostering forefront disciplinary and interdisciplinary research programs and research experience involving large-scale infrastructure, logistics, and/or interagency or international partnerships; and
  • Broad understanding of institutions where research is conducted and knowledge of grant and contract administration, fiscal management, and budget preparation with experience in research support.

Final selection of career appointees requires the approval of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). OPM approval will be based on the selectee's background in the following five executive core qualification areas: leading change, leading people, results driven leadership, business acumen, and building coalitions.
