The Alaska Salmon Fellows and Four Valleys Community School in Girdwood, Alaska will be sharing original work from artists and writers as part of Salmon Shadows, an experimental public arts and humanities project. This project is generative by its very nature, as each stop on the tour will provide opportunities to test new methods of hosting conversations about salmon shadows and refine methods to engage communities with complex problems through art and story.
The event will include:
- A pop-up show featuring salmon art from across Alaska,
- Facilitated conversation about Alaska's salmon system, and
- Salmon-inspired catering.
Event Description:
Alaskans typically tell positive salmon narratives and often neglect the matching dark sides of related stories, like the struggles for sustainability, equity, and resource management.
The theory behind this initiative is that the stories we tell matter, informing the way we think, act, and make decisions. Community conversations about these stories, and what these stories obscure, could change the way people think, act, and make decisions.
