Northumbria University invites applications for a PhD position in the impacts of Arctic snow on soil and sea ice. This three-year position will be located in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.
This project will explore ways of removing the limitations of current remote sensing capabilities and accurate retrieval of snow mass through measurements and modeling for future development in snow remote sensing.
The successful candidate will use measurements of snow properties and snow mass from a wide range of tundra and sea ice environments to develop a robust quantification of variability in Arctic snowpack properties. Recent advances in modeling of snowpack structure (e.g. Flexible Snow Model) and microwave radiative transfer in snow (e.g. Snow Microwave Radiative Transfer Model) will allow for the development of new approaches to spatially distributed simulation of Arctic snow that will directly feed into development of future low-cost satellite mission ideas.
