The Campbell laboratory at the University of Rhode Island (URI) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position that will investigate feeding of central Arctic Ocean zooplankton using traditional grazing experiments and molecular gut DNA of field collected animals, as part of the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) program. This full-time, 24-month position, beginning in early 2020, will be located in Narragansett, Rhode Island.
The goal of this project is to quantify the role that the mesozooplankton play in biological transformations and cycling of important elements in the central Arctic Ocean ecosystem. The project is a collaborative effort between Robert Campbell (University of Rhode Island; URI), Carin Ashjian (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution; WHOI), and Hauke Flores and Barbara Niehoff (Alfred Wegner Institute).
The successful candidate will gain experience and receive training in zooplankton sampling methodologies and rate process studies, as well as scientific collaboration, community outreach, and mentoring. There will be an opportunity to participate in postdoctoral career development programs at both URI and WHOI.
The postdoctoral researcher will travel to and participate in one leg of the ice camp (approximately three months) in spring (April – June) of 2020 as a member of the Ecosystem Team, and will assist with zooplankton collections and rate process studies as well as help with other ecosystem sampling of the water column and ice. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the analysis of the gut DNA content of the zooplankton samples collected at MOSAiC, processing the sequence data, and write up of results for presentations and publications.
Candidates must have a PhD in oceanography, biology, or a related field by January 2020. Applicants must have demonstrated experience in the molecular techniques needed for DNA extraction and analysis, as well as experience with bioinformatic tools used for sequence data analysis and statistical methods. Prior work with zooplankton is beneficial, but not required. Excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written, and quantitative analytical skills are necessary.
