The National Weather Service (NWS) invites applications for a social scientist. This full-time position is open to recent graduates and will be located in Anchorage, Alaska.
Recent graduates include individuals who have completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution. Exceptions include veterans who, due to military service obligation were unable to apply within two years of receiving their degree, have up to six years after degree completion to apply.
Duties include:
- Serve as the Alaska Region Social Scientist to improve and increase the quality of social science capabilities at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the effectiveness of the mission and priorities of the NWS products, services, and risk communication with core partners and the public;
- Perform routine analyses for a variety of requests, including direct and indirect impacts of weather on humans, the effectiveness of agency communication, and social readiness for extreme weather; and
- Provide professional advice and assistance to staff members on the use of social media tools and supplement the community outreach efforts of the various regional programs.
