The Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (IARPC) Diversity and Inclusion Team is seeking self-nominations from members of the Arctic research community (in particular, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) to become co-leads of the team. This part-time, volunteer position is currently an unpaid position and will be remotely located.
Given the events of the past weeks, the leadership of the IARPC Diversity and Inclusion Team has been discussing concrete steps on how the team can best support the Arctic research community, and more specifically our Black and Indigenous colleagues, during this time. The leadership of the IARPC Diversity and Inclusion Team consists of no Black or Indigenous members. The team wants to ensure that all those in Arctic research and policy are the ones doing the work to move forward efforts on inclusivity and equity in Arctic research. That being said, the team acknowledges that as much as we read, see, and listen to the experiences of our Black and Indigenous colleagues, those of us without those identities will never fully understand the experience of being Black and/or Indigenous in Arctic research.
Those interested should submit the online form. For the past year and a half, the Diversity and Inclusion Team has established some input and goals with initial activities, but now, would like to revisit their Terms of Reference and future plans with expanded leadership.
In addition, in recognition of the importance of diversity in science, the team wanted to create a space for folks to share resources and start conversations about diversity and Arctic science. This post on IARPC Collaborations on Diversity in Science Resources is a space where the team is encouraging IARPC community members to both share and discover such resources on allyship, actions, education around racial issues in science, and other relevant resources.
Finally, the Diversity & Inclusion Team co-leads and IARPC leadership in general are welcome to any advice from the IARPC community on what the team could do or actions they should prioritize moving forward in light of the current situation. To submit input, contact Allen Pope (allen.pope [at] iasc.info), Olivia Lee (oalee [at] alaska.edu), and Colleen Strawhacker (colstraw [at] nsf.gov).
