The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) invites applications for a postdoctoral climate and ocean model data analyst. This three-year position will be located in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
The successful candidate will investigate oceanographic and climate variability in the Antarctic and Arctic regions and its impacts on the wider Earth System. BAS runs sophisticated idealized regional and global climate and oceanographic models (including sea ice and ice shelf components) to simulate past conditions and also to predict how the climate and ocean will evolve in the future. Models are run on local and national supercomputing facilities and generate large volumes of data, and BAS also makes extensive use of output from very large models and ensembles run externally, such as the IPCC CMIP6 ensemble.
The climate and ocean model data analyst will be responsible for accessing, pre-processing, and analyzing Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) class and similar climate model data in support of BAS researchers. The incumbent will assist scientists in preparing data for scientific publication. Other datasets, such as those used to force the models or produced by satellite remote sensing, may also require management and analysis.
Applicants must have a degree or higher qualification in a relevant physical science subject, previous experience of programming in a Linux/Unix environment including familiarity with Fortran and Python, and experience of handing large data sets. Experience working with cluster-based computing, cloud computing, and with geophysical and ocean/atmosphere/climate data is strongly desirable.
This role is full time, but BAS will consider applications with part-time or flexible working patterns.
