The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) invites applications for a Principal Researcher in environmental artificial intelligence (AI). This permanent, full-time position will be located in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
The Principal Researcher will lead research that applies data science and AI methods to environmental science. BAS is looking for a dynamic leader with a proven track record of securing external funding to significantly grow this research activity at the British Antarctic Survey. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with BAS partner organizations, including The Alan Turing Institute, international research institutes, the BAS University network, and two Centers for Doctoral Training (CDTs) in Earth Observation and AI for Environmental Risk. Candidates will be experts in data science and artificial intelligence, with leadership experience working in an interdisciplinary setting within the context of environmental science.
Areas where AI research could be developed include:
- Monitoring the Earth from satellite images,
- Monitoring the oceans and glacial systems,
- Modelling and prediction of extreme events,
- Environmental sensor networks,
- Digital Twinning for the natural environment,
- Impact of climate change on water security, and
- Using AI methods and models to inform policy.
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
Duties include:
- Conduct outstanding, creative, and innovative research in AI for environmental science;
- Develop internationally-significant outcomes through high-impact publications;
- Work collaboratively with key partners (e.g. from research councils, charities, industry, and government departments) to develop new research ideas;
- Obtain external funding to underpin and grow the research activity in this area at BAS;
- Take on line management responsibilities for staff, and supervise students;
- Disseminate research to both academic and non-academic audiences, including public engagement, and seek ways to develop societal impact;
- Represent BAS to key stakeholders, such as funding agencies and government;
- Play a role in advancing the BAS AI Lab;
- Contribute to the smooth-running of the organization as and when required; and
- Some teaching/training may be required as part of collaboration work.
