The Arctic Research Center at the University of Virginia is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in social science. This one- to two-year position will be located in Charlottesville, Virginia.

This National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded position will investigate how a team of environmental scientists, architects, and social scientists collaborates with each other and with the residents of Utqiaġvik, Alaska, to study the interactions between climate change and Arctic infrastructure.

This research project aims to improve the sustainability of Arctic cities through collaborative knowledge-making. Researchers will investigate how different infrastructure designs respond to the effects of climate change, such as permafrost thaw, based on data from micro-meteorological sensors and ground-penetrating radar.

Duties will include:

  • Conduct field research in Utqiaġvik, Alaska;
  • Organize and conduct interviews and participant observation with researchers and community partners;
  • Organize workshops and events to bring together researchers and community members;
  • Help supervise undergraduate and graduate student research assistants;
  • Contribute to the project’s data management and data governance research and practice; and
  • Participate in academic conferences and prepare publications for peer-reviewed journals.

A PhD in science and technology studies (STS) or relevant social science is required by the position start date. Required skills include experience conducting ethnographic research methods and experience contributing to collaborative research (e.g., through interdisciplinary research teams, participatory action research, collective ethnography, etc.).

Relevant interests may include, but are not limited to, interdisciplinary knowledge production; community-engaged research, especially with Indigenous communities; issues of data governance and Indigenous data sovereignty; social studies of environmental sciences or climate research; and infrastructure studies.

Applications must include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a sample chapter or paper, and contact information for three references.

Review of applications will begin 15 September 2021, though the position will remain open until filled.
