Toolik Field Station (TFS) invites applications for a web developer. This full-time, term-funded position will be located in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful candidate will continue the development of the TFS website and web-based applications through a dashboard, myToolik. This dashboard has become fundamental to the day-to-day operations of the station to both staff and researchers visiting the station. The apps are database driven so information can be shared between apps as needed. In addition to the technical duties, engaging and interacting with the TFS community is a large part of the job of everyone who works at TFS.

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or other information technology related fields), or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required. Two years of experience programming and in database management experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience is also required.

Preferred experience includes:

  • Experience in web page layout working in HTML, not just using a content management system;
  • Must have proficiencies in programming in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Additional experience with at least one programming language, preferably PHP;
  • Must understand program flow including looping and conditionals, regardless of programing language;
  • Expert in SQL and good with data modeling for relational, analytical, and big data workloads;
  • Be comfortable with different database administration tools, including but not limited to phpMyAdmin;
  • Ability to talk to other staff about what is needed, offer creative options, and build intuitive solutions;
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including a proactive disposition toward identifying problems and providing solutions;
  • Ability to think through and test code for proper functionality; and
  • Ability to debug and rewrite code to fix errors and add new functionality to existing code.

Toolik Field Station (TFS) is a research station operated and managed by the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). TFS provides logistical, operational, and scientific support to visiting scientists conducting Arctic research.
