The University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Environmental and Arctic Studies to start in Fall 2022. This full-time, tenure-track position will be located in Fort Kent, Maine.
The successful candidate will serve as the Assistant Professor of Environmental and Arctic Studies. UMFK seeks applicants with applied and academic multidisciplinary environmental and Arctic related experience in one or more of the following fields: business and economies, people and cultures, land and environment, security and governance, and will have an interest in teaching a variety of general courses in their discipline. This is a nine-month position with a primary focus on teaching, followed by service and research. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching 12 credit hours per semester and will be comfortable with teaching in an interdisciplinary and collaborative manner.
Applicants with academic or applied experiences in environmental studies, biology, and the circumpolar regions are preferred, and will be expected to be able to develop curricula and courses, advise students, participate in division affairs collegially, and engage in university service and scholarship. The successful candidate should have a willingness to teach a variety of natural science and Arctic related courses in their discipline. The preferred candidate will have competence in or interest in developing competence in the connections between the state of Maine and the Circumpolar North and Arctic.
Required qualifications include:
- Minimum of a doctoral degree in Environmental or Arctic Studies or a related discipline, ABDs will be considered;
- Interest in and ability to teach courses related to the environment and/or the circumpolar regions (North and Arctic regions preferred);
- A demonstrated commitment to quality undergraduate teaching;
- Ability and willingness to teach in an interdisciplinary manner;
- Ability and willingness to teach in both on campus and online modalities;
- Ability and willingness to develop curricula and courses;
- Ability and willingness to engage in university and system service and research; and
- Applied experience in a relevant field.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Applied field experience in a circumpolar region;
- Previous expedition and research experience in a circumpolar region and field;
- Grant writing and expedition organization experience; and
- Willingness to develop and participate in internships, practicums, or research and learning experiences.
